In the setting of real-life Zaire and the Great Lakes region of central Africa, three bank investigators provoke retaliation by corrupt government officials. An attractive and skilled fraud investigator from Mauritius finds herself working closely, perhaps too closely, with a charming but discredited banker from California and a Zairian lawyer with intriguing skills. The overnight disappearance of hospitalized infants and the flourishing clandestine market in coffee, valuable minerals and ores along the eastern frontier of the country, gradually coalesce to form an ugly puzzle. After government secrets are revealed by the investigators, a suicide thrusts the American to the top position of the African bank where he has been given asylum. The number of abducted infants grows, promising developments appear to bring hope, cruel events turn upon them, and unexpected moves by three powerful women working behind the scenes change everything.

If you're the kind of person who gives up on a book if the first chapter or so drags, please buckle down and keep trying with this one. While it starts slow, things do pick up, and it's totally worth it.

Getting to know the characters was very enjoyable, and I found myself quite attached to them. They're the sort that I wish were real because I'd love to sit and have a drink with them.

The author shows great skill in not just building the characters, but in his descriptions of the surroundings. It's obvious that he spent some time in areas like this himself.

My only real complaint, aside from a slow start, is that there were some errors that caused me to have to reread a handful of sentences a few times throughout the book. These were mostly missing words after what I imagine was an edit to correct something else.

All that aside, this book kept my attention! The writer uses foreshadowing quite well, but still manages to keep you guessing. I was on the edge of my seat right up until the very end! This is certainly not your average suspense novel and I recommend it wholeheartedly.

Zaire Golden Babies Charles Leister 9781300536079 Books Reviews

I thoroughly enjoyed Zaire's Golden Babies!! Loved the friendship between Gabriel, Justin and Monique and how they dealt with overwhelming problems.Great twist at the end....didn't see that coming. It was fascinating to see the circumstances becoming more and more complex...wondering if betrayals were in store...loved the resolutions to those questions....

I must admit that in Chapter One I was a bit confused...I'm one of those lightweights who likes to get into the plot right away and this presented a delay for me..When I began chapter two I felt the excitement of the story...perhaps that would be a good beginning and flashbacks to circumstances in San Francisco could be interjected....I'M NO WRITER, just rambling on...And, as I got further into the story, I could see how the beginning is totally relevant to all that happens, soooo...who knows...AND, WHO AM I TO BE CRITIQUING THIS GREAT "READ".

I love a good book and this was definitely one.
This books grabs you in San Francisco, tosses you to Belgium, and lands you in the Congo. You are in as much suspense as the main character, Gabriel, about what is going to happen next - to him and around him. The plot has as many twists and turns as a Jeffery Deaver novel, and keeps you guessing right to the end. I will definitely look for a sequel. I recommend this book highly. If you love mystery, this is right up your alley.
VERY accurately & realistically depicted almost like reading a travel book....yet, it is definitely fiction, but it has style - the author has a vivid talent
What a great book! I found the beginning a little slow as the plot was gradually ratcheted upwards, but shortly after touch down in Africa it was an unstoppable roller coaster ride all the way. The author seamlessly laid down the action at an increasingly breathless pace.

A great international cast of characters starting with the main protagonist, Gabriel an annoyingly honest american banker in a mid-life crisis, Monique the wonderfully intelligent (if slightly mysterious) leading lady from Réunion, even an ex-colonial Belgian policeman and many and various diverse Zairian people.

There isn't too much gratuitous violence, the characters are nice and decent people but there is plenty of drama, excitement and action along the way. It even has a happy ending. In short it is essentially a good old fashioned adventure story. More please!
A good read. Mr. Leister obviously knows Zaire.
This book was well written, but needed a little more explanation in the beginning of the story. Seems like anything I have read based in Africa is depressing, but I guess that's the reality.
I really did not like this book! It is reasonably well written, but the lack of character development left me not caring much about any of them. I was sucked in by the title and the subject of stolen babies being sold. I hoped to learn more about what happened to them, but was totally disappointed. Most of the story was about international banking fraud and investigators trying to find the culprits. The babies were almost an an afterthought, and not a main subject of the book. There were about 300 pages that I wasn't even interested in. That along with too many editing issues left me frustrated. The incredible lies, secrets, relationships, coincidences, and fairytale ending was just too over the top. Sorry. Great title, lousy book.
